Welcome to our latest addition of Mustang Sports weekly recapping another week in St. Rita sports as the football team takes center stage once again with their quarterfinal victory on the road last Saturday while the hockey team kept rolling along with a big week of CCL action.
The varsity football team travelled to Country Club Hills on Saturday afternoon to face the very talented Hillcrest Hawks in an IHSA Class 5A state quarterfinal matchup. The Mustang faithful showed up in full force outnumbering the Hillcrest fans by a five-to-one ratio, and the "Fighting" Mustangs did not disappoint as they collected their first quarterfinal win since 2011 soundly beating the Hawks 35-8.
The St. Rita offense started slowly in the first half, but the Mustang defense and special teams picked up the slack as senior all-conference defensive back Tommy Hixson returned a second-quarter Hillcrest punt forty-seven yards for a 7-0 St. Rita lead. The defense then provided the next big play as senior defensive end Evan Wojcicki recorded a strip-sack fumble recovered by the Mustangs deep in Hawks territory setting up sophomore running back Kaleb Brown's first of his two touchdown runs staking St. Rita to a 14-0 halftime lead.
With the Mustangs receiving the second-half kickoff, the offense would turn to Brown (23 carries, 135 yards, 2TDs) on the opening drive lining him up in the wildcat and taking the ball deep into Hillcrest territory before sophomore quarterback Tommy Ulatowski (3-6, 72yds, 1TD) hit junior running back Kyle James out of the backfield for a nineteen-yard touchdown giving the Mustangs an insurmountable 21-0 lead midway thru the third quarter.
Brown would add a bruising 38-yard touchdown run late in the third ending his night and senior running back Jayden Edwards would once again find the end zone for the third consecutive week as St. Rita took a 35-0 lead into the fourth quarter. The starting Mustang defense would once again not allow a single point while forcing three key turnovers as Hillcrest only score would come very late in the contest against the St. Rita reserves.
The Mustangs (9-3) will ride their 8-game winning streak into this Saturday's home semifinal game against the unbeaten (Rockford)Boylan Titans (12-0) who advanced with a thrilling 19-16 home victory over Sycamore. Game time this Saturday is 2:30pm with a berth in the IHSA Class 5A title game on the line.
The varsity hockey team had a great week with CCL wins over Brother Rice (5-2) on Thursday, at Marist (7-0) on Saturday, and at Marmion (6-3) on Sunday. Sophomore goalie Mike Menard recorded all three wins between the pipes while eleven Mustangs scored goals in the wins led by seniors Luke Napleton (4 goals) and Tyler Pruszewski (3 goals). Next up for the "Skating" Mustangs are league leaders Providence Friday night and St. Ignatius Sunday both on the road.
Check back again next week as we recap the Mustangs home semifinal football game against Boylan Catholic as well as the hockey team's games against the top two teams in the Catholic League.
