This week in Mustang sports saw the hockey team open the Kennedy Cup playoffs while the
wrestling team travelled down south to Edwardsville to finish their regular season, and the varsity
basketball team took their show on the road to the east side of Chicago as they battled the St. Francis
De Sales Pioneers.
The varsity hockey team battled the Carmel Catholic Corsairs in a first round best 2-of-3 series in
the Kennedy Cup playoffs. On Friday night the Skating Mustangs travelled to Palatine as they beat the
#4 seed Carmel Corsairs 3-1 in game one of the best-of-3 series. Senior All-State selection Luke
Napleton tallied two goals and sophomore goalie Mike Menard registered 35 saves in the victory.
Sophomore Joe Kostlc added the third goal for the Mustangs.
On Saturday game two was played again at Orbit Ice Arena in Palatine as the Mustangs fell
behind Carmel 2-1 in the third period, but a Napleton goal from between the circles with four minutes
to play and freshman Jake Malzone's game-winning goal with just over a minute left in regulation
allowed St. Rita to advance to the second round of the Kennedy Cup playoffs with a thrilling 4-3 victory
clinching the series (2-0).
Next up for the fifth-seeded Mustangs will be the top seed in the Catholic League, Providence
Catholic. Game one is scheduled for Friday night at Arctic Ice Arena in Orland.
The JV hockey team will begin their quest for the Dichristina Cup on Saturday February 8th at
Orbit Ice Arena in Orland against Marmion Academy. The JV Skating Mustangs are the top seed in the
The varsity basketball team travelled to St. Francis De Sales on Friday to battle the Pioneers and
the Mustangs made quick work of the home team winning easily 85-56 to remain tied for first place in
the Catholic League White division.
The Mustangs (14-9, 6-4) were led on the evening by senior Alec Millender (21 points) and
senior Dalen Horace (13 points) while senior Kevin Murney posted a double-double with 10pts and
11 rebs. St. Rita will host Richards on Tuesday night as all fans are encouraged to wear purple and gold
in honor of the tragedy last Sunday in California that took the lives of nine people including basketball
legend Kobe Bryant.
The varsity wrestling team travelled to Edwardsville to compete in a quad with Anna-Jonesboro,
Normal West and the host Edwardsville Tigers. Senior Eric Anderson (2 pins), junior David Scheid (2
pins), and junior Brian Deenihan (2 pins) all had strong showings on the day for the Mustangs. Next up
for St. Rita will be the regional championship tournament at Reavis on Saturday, February 8.
The Frosh/Soph wrestling team competed on Saturday, February 1 in the CCL championships at DeLaSalle
where they finished fourth overall. Freshman Austin Dangles and sophomore Jax Kalemba both won
championships in their weight classes while sophomore Padraig Flannery (6th), freshman Jake Pietryla
(5th), sophomore Sean Stack (4th), freshman Jonathan Fulgencio (4th), sophomore Elwyn Geisert (4th),
sophomore Tadhg Scanlon (5th) and sophomore Luke McMahon (5th) all had strong showings for the
