It was another busy week in athletics around St. Rita as the football program swept the DeLaSalle Meteors while the hockey team opened their season and the soccer team continued with their Catholic League schedule.
The varsity hockey team, led by Head Coach Brian Coleman '99, opened their season by competing for the Inaugural Southside Cup against Marist, Brother Rice, and Mount Carmel. The Skating Mustangs battled Brother Rice in their opener on Saturday and came away victorious over the Crusaders 5-3. Then on Sunday they took home the inaugural Southside Cup by defeating Mt. Carmel 3-0. The Mustangs were led offensively by senior Danny Glynn (3G 2A), junior Andrew Capuano (2G 1A) and senior David Bauer (1G 2A). Senior Kyle Gustafson was stellar between the pipes all weekend recording 22 saves against the Crusaders then 29 saves in his shutout of the Caravan.
The football team opened Catholic play with a crossover sweep of the undefeated DeLaSalle Meteors as the varsity prevailed 37-30 while the sophomores remained undefeated beating DeLaSalle 49-6.
The varsity soccer team lost both of their matches this week by scores of 6-0 to Marmion Academy and 2-0 to St. Laurence while the sophomores defeated the Cadets 6-0 and lost to the Vikings 1-0.
