It was another busy week in Mustang sports action as the football team travelled to Lombard to battle the top-ranked Class 5A team in the state, Montini while the soccer team returned to its winning ways after a tough last week, and the golf team competed in a tournament at Calumet CC last Saturday.
The varsity football team hit the road for the third consecutive week trying to break an early-season, 2-game losing streak against one of the toughest schedules in the state. This week Class 5A top-ranked Montini was the opponent, and a desperate Mustang squad jumped out early on the home Broncos taking a 28-17 lead into the halftime locker room.
Junior quarterback Brian Johnson (3 TDs) threw two first half touchdown passes to senior receiver Joe Polselli and junior receiver Henry Wilson and sophomore running back Kalob Brown (25 carries, 205 yards, 2TDs) ran for two scores to help the Mustangs to the halftime advantage.
St. Rita took the second half kick-off and drove 65 yards capped off by a touchdown pass from Johnson to Wilson, their second hook-up of the game, as the Mustangs took a commanding 35-17 lead in the third quarter.
The defending Class 5A runner-up Broncos would not go down easy as two Mustangs turnovers and several big plays by the Montini quarterback, who totaled over 500 yards of offense in the game, was too much for the young St. Rita squad as the Broncos scored 28 straight points to send the Mustangs home (1-3) with a 45-35 loss.
The freshmen team gave up a long touchdown pass with only seconds to play to lose a tough one to the Broncos while the sophomores improved to (3-1) with a 31-24 win over Montini.
The golf team travelled to Calumet CC last Saturday and finished 4th out of the 7-team field with a team score of 363. Junior Liam McKillop was once again low man for the Mustangs carding an 88 while junior Aidan Connelly shot a 90. The "Swinging" Mustangs will battle Beecher this afternoon and compete in the Ridge Invite on Saturday before the post-season begins.
Coming off a tough week, the varsity soccer team bounced back in a big way with convincing wins over DePaul Prep (9-2) and Brooks Academy (8-0). Eleven different Mustangs scored in the wins including a hat-trick by Kenya Sumpter versus Brooks. Freshmen Aidan Breslin had a goal and 3 assists, including an assist on his senior brother Brendan Breslin's goal against DePaul. St. Rita will travel to St. Joseph today, Providence on Thursday with the Augustinian Cup on the line, and to Guerin Prep on Saturday.
Check back again next week as we once again recap the week in Mustangs Sports as the varsity football team comes home to battle Marian Central Catholic on Friday night at Doyle Stadium.
