It was another busy week in Mustang sports as St. Rita celebrated its annual homecoming week welcoming back alums of all ages Friday night for the football game against Marian Catholic.
On Friday night the varsity football team looked to extend their modest 2-game winning streak as they welcomed Marian Catholic to town in a crossover game. The night began with junior receiver Henry Wilson returning the opening kickoff in electrifying fashion into Spartan territory, but the excitement of the great start was quickly tempered as Wilson suffered a serious leg injury that required an ambulance to be called onto the field.
The Mustangs played valiantly the rest of the night with thoughts of their fallen teammate on their minds as they scored a season-high 55 points en route to an easy 55-7 homecoming win moving them to within one victory of clinching a berth in the Class 5A state playoff field.
Sophomore Kaleb Brown (5 carries, 182 yards, 3TDs) once again led the way on offense as junior running back Kyle James (2 TDs) and senior Jaden "the Bus" Edwards (15 carries, 82yds, 1TD) contributed on a night where everyone played including senior quarterback Justin Valdez who also scored a rushing touchdown.
The Mustangs (4-3) will host Benet Academy (6-1) Friday night with an opportunity to punch their ticket to the IHSA playoffs on the line. The sophomores will play beforehand at 5pm against Benet.
The varsity soccer team continued its winning ways beating DeLaSalle (7-1), Hubbard (6-0), and Oak Lawn (4-1) on Saturday as they honored their nine seniors prior to the contest.
St. Rita (14-4-1) has earned the #3 seed in the IHSA Class 3A Brother Rice Regional which will open on October 22nd.
The varsity hockey team continued its strong start going (2-1) on the week defeating Fenwick 6-3 and Notre Dame 7-1 while dropping a tough 4-3 decision on the road at Carmel Catholic in Mundelein.
Mike Menard and Jimmy Dolan picked up the wins between the pipes as senior Luke Napleton led the way with 4 goals on the week. Danny Dargan (3 goals), Tyler Pruszewski (2 goals), and Brendan Day (2 goals) also contributed for the Mustangs. Ed Wilson and Ryan Cleve had strong weeks defensively while Jake Jana provided energy all week chipping in with a goal and 3 assists. The "Skating" Mustangs will next travel to Minnesota for NAHL prep action.
Junior Liam McKillop was St. Rita's lone participant in the IHSA golf sectional championship on Monday. McKillop shot well thru 16 holes, but unfortunately he found the water on the par 3 17th hole thus ending his chances of advancing to state.
Check back again next week as we recap the home varsity football game against Benet, the soccer regular season finale at Marian Catholic, and the varsity hockey team's first trip out to Minnesota.
