It was another busy week in Mustang sports with the fall seasons are now in full swing as the football team travelled to Oak Lawn to battle #6 Richards while the soccer team continued their early season success with two victories, and the golf team received a great individual performance in the St. Rita Southside Shootout at Glenwoodie.
On Friday night in Oak Lawn, a packed house was treated to a knock-down, drag-it-out, heavyweight fight between two perennial football powers before Richards finally escaped with a hard-fought 35-28 victory over the Mustangs.
Trailing 28-6 early in the 3rd quarter, St. Rita mounted an epic comeback behind 3 rushing touchdowns from sophomore running back Kalob Brown (22 carries, 122 yards)as they tied the Bulldogs at 28 in the fourth quarter.
Richards, led by the state's top-ranked running back, Lesean Williams, answered with a clutch 84-yard drive as they took a 35-28 lead with just under 5 minutes to play. The Mustangs would get two more chances to tie, but a fourth-down stop and a late interception by Richards clinched the victory sending the Mustang faithful home disappointed with a 35-28 loss, dropping their record to (1-1) on the season.
The sophomore Mustangs (2-0)beat the Bulldogs 45-8 on Friday night while the freshmen notched the first victory of the season beating Richards 34-20 at Doyle Stadium Saturday morning.
The varsity soccer team continued its winning ways with 2 wins in 3 matches on the week beating Agricultural Science 6-0 and Tinley Park 4-1 while losing on the road at Marist 4-0. They will take a (5-1) record into their game tonight as they host Marmion Academy at 6:30pm.
The varsity golf team hosted the annual St. Rita Southside Shootout at Glenwoodie Golf Course in Glenwood, IL on Saturday. The "Swinging" Mustangs finished 7th out of 17 teams as they were led by junior Liam McKillop, a key member of last year's IHSA Sectional qualifying team, who shot a stellar 78 to finish 4th out of 81 golfers. The golf team will battle St. Laurence tomorrow and Marian Catholic on Thursday.
Check back again next week as we recap another exciting week in Mustang Sports action as the varsity football team travels to Wilmette to take on the Loyola Ramblers and the soccer and golf teams continue into conference play.
