As the fall seasons past the halfway point, it was another busy week in St. Rita athletics as the football team, soccer team and golf teams were all in action.
The varsity football team dropped a tough 29-13 decision at Montini in a Catholic League Blue battle in Lombard. After falling behind 13-0 in the opening minutes, the Mustangs battled back to cut the deficit to 3 points in the second half before the Broncos pulled away late to hand St. Rita another tough loss
The freshmen and sophomore football teams continued their winning ways with wins over Montini. The sophomores remained unbeaten (5-0) with a thrilling 20-13 win on Friday night while the freshmen team easily handled the Broncos 35-12 on Saturday morning at St. Rita.
Kyle James ran for two scores and quarterback Frankie Schmitt found Aidan Flynn in for another score for the sophomores as Mike Gaughan led a great defensive effort.
Freshmen quarterback Tommy Ulatowski ran for two scores while running back Eric Nowak added two touchdown runs for the freshmen on Saturday morning.
The varsity soccer team had a fantastic week winning both of their matches in exciting fashion. Last Thursday, the "Kicking" Mustangs hosted Augustinian rival Providence with the traditional Augustinian Cup on the line once again. Goals by juniors Carlos Sanchez and Brendan Breslin forced the game into overtime at 2-2 and the Mustangs would eventually win by penalty kicks to bring the cup home once again.
On Saturday they rode the momentum from Thursday's win to eke out a 2-1 win at Oak Lawn as Logan Corum scored on header from a corner kick late to secure the victory.
The varsity hockey team is in full swing as they defeated Sandburg 4-0 on Thursday at SIA behind two goals and an assist from junior Luke Napleton and a 23-save whitewash from senior goalie Kyle Gustafson. Senior Danny Glynn added a goal and an assist for the Mustangs. They will next play at home on Thursday against Barrington at 7:55.
The varsity golf team participated in the Brother Rice Invite on Saturday at Ridge CC and finished 3rd overall as senior Brendan Patton finished 5th overall with an 84 while senior Michael Henze posted an 85.
Check back again next Monday as St. Rita will close out the month of September with another busy week in Mustang sports.
