Welcome to another addition of Mustang Sports Weekly……..the most exciting week of the year thus far for Mustang sports!  The varsity soccer team won their first IHSA regional championship since 1990, and the varsity football team won their fifth straight game to clinch a share of the Catholic League Green title.

The varsity soccer team led by Head Coach Bob Kellam '92 came into the IHSA Class 2A state playoffs as the #3 seed in the Kankakee Sectional as they opened regional play at the Brother Rice regional against Rich Central, but a mix-up with officials caused the game to be re-scheduled before St. Rita was eventually determined the winner by forfeit.

That set up a re-match with the hometown Crusaders, who St. Rita had beaten 2-1 during the regular season.  The Mustangs came out fast as Catholic League Lawless Award winner Langston Bedgood put St. Rita on top 1-0 with a goal at the twenty-minute mark of the first half.  Bedgood would score again about halfway through the second half to give St. Rita an insurmountable two-goal lead as they held on to win their first regional championship in 29 years defeating Brother Rice 2-1.

The "Kicking" Mustangs will now travel to Kankakee Tuesday night to battle Oak Forest, who beat St. Rita in last year's regional championship match.  Game time in Kankakee is 6:30pm immediately following the other sectional semi-final between St. Laurence and Bremen at 4:30pm.

The varsity football team led by Head Coach Todd Kuska '90 won their fifth straight game defeating #9 Notre Dame 7-0 Friday night at Doyle Stadium to secure a piece of the Chicago Catholic League Green title.

Sophomore quarterback Tommy Ulatowski (13-21, 100yds, 1TD 1INT) hit junior wide receiver Isiah Bragg (4 catches 38yds, 1TD) on a nine-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give the Mustangs a lead they would never relinquish as the defense posted their second shutout of the season.

Junior linebacker Mike Gaughan led the way for the stout Mustang defense recording 14 tackles including 4TFLs.  Junior Brandon Norred added an interception and the defensive line provided huge pressure all night on the Dons quarterback as St. Rita improved to (5-0) at home for the season.

St. Rita (6-3, 2-1) now moves onto the IHSA Class 5A state playoffs where they have earned the #8 seed in the northern half of the bracket.  They will battle #9 seed Glenbard South this Friday 7pm at Doyle Stadium.

The varsity hockey team bounced back Sunday night after a tough loss Thursday to Providence beating state power Barrington 5-4 in overtime.  Senior Pat McDonnell scored 4 goals on the night including the game-winner in the overtime period.

Check back later in the week as Mustang Sports weekly will provide a special mid-week in-depth preview of the Mustangs' first round matchup against Glenbard South as well as a look into the rest of the Class 5A field.
