As we move along trudging thru the cold, winter months, Mustang sports continued to turn up the heat with the wrestling team hosting their senior night and competing in the CCL championships while the swimming team took the title at the Evergreen Park High School Invitational. The hockey team concluded their regular season and the varsity basketball team had a light week playing only on Tuesday night at home against Montini.
The varsity basketball team remained tied on top of the Catholic League White standings as they made quick work of the visiting Montini Broncos last Tuesday night at St. Rita. The Mustangs (13-9, 5-4) shot a lights-out 60% from the field for the game while hitting a season-high thirteen bombs as they posted a season-best for points defeating the Broncos 89-63.
Senior guard Alec Millender (Wayne St. commit) led four Mustangs in double figures with 19 points as senior Kevin Murney (16 points), senior Connor Serven (13 points), and freshman Kaiden Space (12 points) also contributed.
St. Rita, who currently shares the top spot in the conference with Leo, will travel to the East Side on Friday night to battle the St. Francis De Sales Pioneers at 7pm.
The varsity hockey team won their regular-season finale over Notre Dame 6-3 on Thursday as senior Luke Napleton registered his third hat trick in the month of January. Freshmen Jake Malzone, senior Jimmy Larkin, and junior Adam Iwaniec added goals in the win. The Mustangs finished the regular season (12-8) in the Catholic League which earned them the #5 seed in the Kennedy Cup playoffs where they will battle #4 seed Carmel Catholic as they open playoff action on Friday night at Orbit Ice Arena in Palatine at 7:50pm. The entire series will be held at Orbit with game two on Saturday 7:30pm and game three (if necessary) Sunday 4pm.
The JV hockey team finished the regular season (17-2) in first place in the Catholic League standings. They will open playoff action next week.
The varsity wrestling team honored their seniors on Thursday night as they hosted Joliet West in a dual 51-18. Freshmen Austin Dangle won his match by a 9-4 decision while senior captain Eric Anderson won by fall.
On Saturday the "Grappling" Mustangs travelled to Providence Catholic to compete in the Catholic League tournament. Senior Marty Larkin (160) finished third in his weight class while freshman Griffin Duffin (120) placed fourth and senior Eric Anderson (220) third. Next up for the varsity is a quad meet in Edwardsville on Saturday while the frosh/soph will compete in the Catholic League tournament on Saturday at DeLaSalle.
The varsity swim team competed in the Evergreen Park Invitational on Friday and took first place out of twelve teams beating the second place team 235-228 as they prepare for the upcoming Catholic League meet.
