While school was shut down for the past few weeks to celebrate the Christmas season, our winter sports teams remained busy as the basketball team played at the Hinsdale South Christmas Tournament while the wrestling team competed in the Dvorak Tournament and the swim team continued with their season.
The varsity basketball team went (2-2) at Hinsdale South losing in the fifth-place game to Oswego East 57-47 last Saturday. The Mustangs won their opener in the tourney in exciting fashion as junior guard Christian Henry hit a runner at the buzzer to lead St. Rita to a 61-59 win over Willowbrook. Senior Alec Millender led the Mustangs with 20 while Henry (16 points) and senior Kevin Murney (14 points) also contributed on the offensive end.
With the win, St. Rita advanced to the quarterfinals with a rematch against Marian Catholic who had beaten the Mustangs 72-52 a week earlier at the CCL/ESCC Shootout at Brother Rice. This time the young Mustangs went toe to toe with the highly ranked Spartans as the score was tied 24-24 at half. A sluggish start by St. Rita to the second half had the Stangs trailing 44-35 at the end of the third before they roared back by scoring ten straight to begin the final quarter taking a brief 45-44 lead. Unfortunately, Marian would again prove to be too much as they pulled away late for a 57-49 win as senior Kevin Murney led the Mustangs with 19.
St. Rita bounced back the next day as they manhandled Westinghouse 75-45 behind the hot shooting of senior Alec Millender (23 points) and senior Dalen Horace (15 points). Millender was named to the all-tournament team as the Mustangs lone representative.
The Mustangs have a difficult week upcoming as they will travel to Loyola tonight and DePaul Prep on Friday with both games scheduled for 7pm tip-offs.
The wrestling team participated in the prestigious Dvorak Tournament over the holidays as senior captain won six straight matches after his opening-round loss to capture third at 160. Larkin also went (6-0) during the Don Flavin Dual Team Invite in DeKalb. Junior captain Brian Deenihan also secured five wins for the Mustangs as well.
The "Grapping" Mustangs (12-12) will battle #2 Mt. Carmel this Thursday night.
The varsity hockey team captured the Southside Cup for the second consecutive year last weekend with wins over Marist (5-3) and Brother Rice (2-1). Senior Luke Napleton scored 3 goals including both in the win over the Crusaders. The "Skating" Mustangs will host the Carmel Corsairs this Thursday at SIA 7:55 puck drop.
Check back again next week as we will review another week in Mustang Sports action including highlights of the varsity basketball team's road trip up north and the hockey team's battle with Carmel.
