The frigid temperatures and snow outside didn't stop Mustang sports this past week as the hockey team travelled to Michigan while the varsity basketball team played three games including a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at the United Center,  the wrestling team competed on Saturday at Lincoln-Way Central in the Illini Classic, and the bowling team competed in the IHSA regionals.

The varsity basketball team won two of three games last week beating St. Joseph at home on Tuesday and DeLaSalle on the road Friday while they dropped a non-conference matchup with Marist in between.

In the win over St. Joseph the Mustangs trailed 38-31 heading into the final quarter of play only to start the fourth with a 15-0 run to take control and knock off the Chargers by a score of 53-47.  Senior guard Alec Millender (Wayne St. signee) led the Mustangs with 17 points while senior big man Connor Serven contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds.

On Wednesday St. Rita played their first ever game at The United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls, against Marist in the 11th annual Griffin/Callahan Classic.  The Mustangs had won eight of the prior ten meetings in the annual classic but on this day it was all RedHawks as Marist beat the Mustangs 57-46 to reclaim the trophy.

Friday night the Mustangs braved the cold and snow and travelled to DeLaSalle to battle the Meteors.  St .Rita led 35-23 at the half behind 15 points from senior Kevin Murney and 11 from Alec Millender, and the Mustangs would win going away picking up a key road victory 73-60 over DeLaSalle as Murney would finish with a game-high 21 and Millender 19.  Senior Connor Serven grabbed 14 rebounds for St. Rita.

The Mustangs (12-9) will host Montini this evening with a 7pm opening tip.

The varsity hockey team took their show on the road over the weekend to compete in the NAHL tournament.  The varsity would advance to the championship game of the tournament against Barrington losing 1-0 while the JV hockey team won their tournament in Michigan by defeating Barrington in a shootout.

The wrestling team lost a tough dual at Marist last Thursday evening but bounced back in a big way finishing in the top ten at Lincoln-Way Central in the Illini Classic Tournament on Saturday. Senior Marty Larkin won the championship at 160 beating the #6 ranked wrestler in the state from Lincoln-Way West 11-2 in the finals.  Senior Eric Anderson was the runner-up at 220 while sophomore Griffin Duffin (120) and junior Brian Deenihan (145) each finished 6th.

The varsity bowling team competed in the IHSA regionals on Saturday finishing 3rd overall.  Junior Tyler Smith took 4th place while senior Jaden Smith (7th place) and junior Mykhai Harris (9th) had strong showings as well.

Four Mustang football players also competed in the Blue/Grey All-American Bowl at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, TX Monday night.  Seniors Mike Milton, Trevor Tovey, Zenin Hall, and Tommy Hixson were chosen to represent St. Rita in the event as the Blue team lost to the Grey 37-30 in overtime.

Check back again next week as we once again recap another busy week in St. Rita Mustang sports action.
